Wetlands Workshop

On July 20th Sarah Kesten, US Science Teacher and Preserve Manager, attended WOW! Workshop and Wetland Exploration” which is a highly regarded wetlands education curriculum developed by the non-profit Wetlands Institute, at The Aquatic Resources Education Center in Smyrna, Delaware.  This particular workshop was organized by the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary which includes the Schuylkill Action Network which, along with the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association, gave us the rain garden grant to install the big rain garden in the Preserve a few years ago.   The workshop offered techniques for us to connect our students with our wetlands and natural spaces without limitations, exploring more ways to engage students outdoors as well as ways to incorporate wetland activities while indoors.

The US New Community Project partners with Urbanstead Philadelphia

The New Community Project spent the day at an urban farm in Philadelphia with their project partner -  Urbanstead, a not-for-profit in Philadelphia dedicated to eradicating food-deserts in urban environments.  Urbanstead’s vision is to support the development of community-driven urban farm projects in Philadelphia that support food justice, local entrepreneurship, stewardship of the urban ecosystem, and community support networks. With training in innovative urban agricultural practices, strong partnerships, expertise in garden development and at-risk youth empowerment, we are poised to foster successful urban farming initiatives throughout Philadelphia in order to improve food access, green infrastructure, and economic opportunity.  You can read more about the organization by clicking here.
