Green Holiday Lunch in the Middle School

The Middle School Green Ambassadors celebrated the upcoming holiday season by ditching the sugary treats and hosting a Green Holiday lunch party where all the food, except the chips, and drinks were green: guacamole, grapes, green drink, pickles, pumpkin seeds, dolmas and green bean snacks. 

MIddle School Students Design Butterfly Garden

At Preserve Day earlier this fall, we employed Middle School student ideas for a redesign of the Butterfly Garden in The Preserve At Germantown Academy. While the final effort looks more like an amalgam of the best ideas from lots of designs, there were many interesting individual designs. 

MS Science Use iPads for Observational Studies in the Academic Courtyard

Here are some photos of my seventh graders using the academic courtyard and iPads to practice observing and creating questions.  They will use these observations and questions to begin working through the scientific method. 

Middel School Students Plant Academic Courtyard Beds

The 6th grade is learning the basics of garden design by planting the vegetable beds in the academic courtyard.  The seedlings were donated by Len Dwinell. The students will be applying what they learn in  their own designs for an expanded butterfly garden in the preserve.

Wissahickon Clean Up

On Saturday, April 30, Assistant Director of Admission-Lower School Matt Rominger organized a small group of Germantown Academy faculty, staff and students to help out with the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association’s 46th annual "Creek Clean Up Day." Representing GA were Middle School Latin teacher Heather Galante and her husband, Dominic, fifth grade teacher Matt Mazurek, Upper School math teacher Jason Straub, Tess Genuardi '05, Middle School/Upper School Chinese teacher Lily Liu, Middle School Science teacher Cory Eklund, Middle School science teacher Kate Cassidy and Middle School students Nolan O. '21, Ryan Q. '21 and Ryan's father, Russell.
"We had great weather and a great time collaborating in this important community event," said Rominger.

MS Project Noah

Project Noah is a citizen science endeavor that was created to provide people of all ages with a simple way to share their experiences with wildlife. The 6th grade is participating in GA's Campus Green mission by uploading pictures of living things to the Project Noah website.

MS Green Ambassadors Tap trees for Maple Syrup

The middle school green ambassadors got another sweet treat when Pepper Pizzino showed them how to tap sugar maples.  In the spring, when the weather conditions are right, the sugar maple sap starts running up and down the tree.  We learned to identify the trees by looking for the holes made by a bird called the yellow bellied sap sucker.  Then students were able to assist as Pepper drilled a hole into the bark of the tree, inserted a hollow reed, connected a hose and ran the hose into a bucket.  So far almost 20 gallons of sap have been collected which, once boiled down, will make one quart of maple syrup.  The student plan on inviting Pepper back for a pancake celebration as long as he brings the syrup.
